Christmas Gift Guide Part I: gift ideas for him and for her!

For Her

For Him

when I was searching for gift ideas, I was so conscious of not selecting outrageously expensive gifts for women (being a little subjective and all), that I ended up with a selection of more expensive items for men )P. Oh well - you can treat the above gift ideas for HER as stocking fillers, coz what we -women - really want is a new Mulberry Alexa or Alexander Mcqueen clutch! Oh and the reason the above Diptyque candle is nearly 200 Euro, is because it's massive and you can always re-use the porcelain container. It's like buying a piece of Wedgewood china, but better ;).

from what I know, most men hate items of clothing as Xmas gifts. I still ended up picking a few accessories and this gorgeous Paul Smith sweater. The rest are gadgets, which i badly want myself!

Look of the Day: Blake Lively in Versace

Trend Alert: Slipper Shoes

when Olivia adopts a trend...we can all safely follow :) I first read about the slipper shoes in Grazia about a month ago and didn't think much of them - not until I saw Olivia sport her classic Stubbs & Wootton flats. Totally in love with the blue pair above! I'm a fickle soul - I know :).

Style Hit or Miss: high waisted jeans

MISS: Anne Hathaway

I'm so not a fan of high waisted pants or jeans, but when styled right they can look ok. Unfortunately for Anne, she didn't pull it off with the above look. Her cropped Burberry jacket looks awfully bulky with those high waisted jeans. Not sure why she decided to roll them up either. I would wear the jacket with skinny jeans or leggings.

HIT: Katie Holmes

Katie channels a bit of 70s hippie chic with this relaxed look. I like how she pairs it with a simple T and cardi. It works.

Economize vs Fantasize: Alpine Cardigan

I got this Zara cardi last month and was delighted to see Mulberry come out with a similar design. Mind you, Mulberry's version is angora blend, while Zara is acrylyc...but who cares really? Zara's cardi is just as cute if not cuter :)!

Economize vs Fantasize: Silk military blouse

Economize (well sort of...): Whistles silk blouse: £95.00

I saw this Whistles blouse in BT the other day and it instantly reminded me of Elizabeth and James version, which I put on my November wishlist. Whistles alternative is just as luxurious and I would definitely wear it tucked-in with skirts & pants, or with leggings.

High Street Find of the week! Lanvin for H&M necklace

so after psyching myself out and preparing to go camp outside of H&M store last week, I failed to execute....When I finally landed in King St store on Sunday morning, the only Lanvin items left were hideous size 18 dresses :(. Lucky for me, a girl clad head-to-toe in Chanel was returning the above necklace )P. As it happens, I adore this piece. Would definitely get more wear out of it than those big flower necklaces, which I wanted so badly! From Chanel girl, I learned that you can still shop online, but have to refresh their site every minute or so, as its crushes due to high traffic. I'm happy with my purchase and think will skip online shopping for now :).

Oddity of the Season: Victoria Beckham's handbags

'Victoria' Bag £ 2300

Victoria Beckham has recently unveiled her handbag line, and I'm not impressed. The design of her handbags is quite dated. What is even more of an oddity is her pricing strategy. The clutch bags start at £1800 and Victoria's hexagonal chain bag retails for £8950. Ummm - sorry to rain on your parade dear - but who is the target consumer? I get that all of Victoria's celebrity pals will queue in line to snag one of these arm candies, but no sane woman would spend £8950 on a Victoria Beckham handbag. I may sound harsh but why buy one-hit wonder when you can stock on two Birkins for the same price?

Zara Evening Collection Winter 2010

check out Zara Evening collection! The little red dress is absolutely stunning! I haven't seen it in stores yet, but you can get it online for £99!

Xmas gift to myself: 'The Hermes Carre'

I love Xmas for so many reasons, but most of all for the gifts galore :)! I kicked off this Xmas season with a gift to myself! I gasped when I saw this book of Hermes scarves in Brown Thomas Dublin today! This book contains a brief history of Hermes scarf, aka Hermes carre, and over 290 pages of images of every Hermes scarf out there. It's a perfect gift for anyone interested in fashion and art! Brown Thomas has 2 copies left, so hurry up! Or else - I found one on Amazon for $99.

Look of the Day: Rachel Bilson in leather shorts

I'm all about leather shorts this winter season! Love the fit of Rachel's shorts and how she pairs them with open-toe booties!

Style Crush: Whitney Port's Red Carpet Marathon

I've always liked Whitney's style, but lately she is hitting the Red Carpet in more polished and edgier looks! Love how she goes for bold prints and mixes up leggings & shorts with classic blazers & clutches. and she's got one impressive shoe collection!

Oddity of the Day: Leighton Meester in Marchesa jumpsuit

Oh boy.....this Marchesa jumpsuit is like a bad incarnation of 1920s Ballet Russes Scheherezade costume....Not a good look dear Leighton :(

Look of the Day: Carey Mulligan

I definitely prefer Carey as a blonde and this look is perfection!

Overview of Boutiques.com

So Google has officially entered high fashion with its new e-commerce project! After spending hours on Boutiques.com, I can say, it's one fabulous site! It acts as an aggregator of 1000 something merchants (Net-a-porter, Asos and Barneys among others) and at this moment offers a selection of over 500 000 products.

Here's my list of highlights and some minor letdowns! I'm pretty sure these letdowns are very temporary, as Boutiques.com is only at Beta stage!

Why I love Boutiques.com:

-Site features celebrities, popular bloggers and designers boutiques, which are online shopping suggestions from the likes of Olivia Palermo, DVF and Mary-Kate Olsen.

-There's a community feel to the site: users can follow each other's boutiques, comment, and share their finds and likes via Twitter & email.

-Trend boutique covers every Fall 2010 trend imaginable!

-Functions like 'love' and 'hate', as well as ability to create your own boutique allow for very personalized suggestions for clothing and accessories.

-Users can start their own boutique after taking style image test and completing style preferences questionnaire. From this point onward you will get suggestions based on your style. You can add your favorites and follow boutiques of other users. I took the test 3 times and each time it recognized my style as Edgy )p.

-When you find an item you like and hover over it, you get more suggestions for similar items in a wide price range. You also get suggestions on how to complete the look.

-You can filter Shoes, Bags, Clothing and Accessories sections by price range, sale items, colors, brand etc. This is probably the best filter I've seen on shopping sites, including Asos.com and Yoox.com.

Thumbs down:

-At least for now, Boutiques.com aggregates clothing from US retailers only.

-Most suggestions of clothing are on a pricier side. You can find amazing High Street finds, but have to search for them.

-There is no jewelry and menswear (for now).

-There is an overwhelming number of clothing items, most of which are not all that appealing - you have to click on 'hate' far too many times to help fine-tune your preferences.

- It would be great to have a feature similar to the one on polyvore.com, whereby users can create their own looks.

Final Verdict: The site is very sticky! It incorporates celebrity style, online shopping and community. I'll let you know what I think of their personalization feature one month from now, after having tested 'hate' and 'love' enough number of times. Oh yes, Boutiques.com is available as an iPad app, which is yet another reason to get an iPad ;)
